Ms. Sally Cook
Zeus State College
149, East Street
San Francisco, CA 95843

Dear Ms. Cook,

I periodically check the college’s web page for employment opportunities. Friday I found what I was looking for, an opening for Assistant Professor of Political Science. To show my great interest in the position, I am enclosing my resume, a list of references and a few reference letters from my years as a Ph.D. student at Chicago University.

My experience teaching undergraduates, conducting research and writing at the Chicago University gave me a solid background in the academic side of political science. In fact, I was in the process of pursuing an academic career when the opportunity came along to become a lobbyist at the state level for some causes I sincerely supported. Six years later I was strongly encouraged to make the move to Washington, D.C. From lobbying in both Springfield and the nation’s capitol, I believe I have gained a depth of practical political experience that will be very useful to college political science students. Also, I have continued to keep my hand in a form of teaching by developing and conducting several successful training programs for lobbyists.

At this point in my career, I would like to settle into an academic position not far from Washington, D.C. that allows me to share what I’ve learned. I would therefore greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss the assistant professor position with you. I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Martha Klingman
