Dear Ms. Cook,

Richard Lean, a long-time friend of mine who is a soil scientist with your department, suggested that I contact you regarding a possible opening for another agriculture and soil scientist. Please accept this letter and my enclosed resume as an application for this position.

Richard and I actually have rather similar backgrounds. As my resume indicates, I have a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master of Science in Soil Science from Davis. After spending 2 years as a research assistant in the field, I have spent several years as an agricultural and soil scientist for Butte County, performing much the same duties as Richard does. (My duties are outlined in detail in my resume.) I am considered an expert in state-of-the-art technologies for soil studies and a good trainer of new staff.
